Design Process

I used double diamond design process to help me explore multiple angles and perspectives for this project. Also, through this process, the problems was identified clearly and assumptions was left to one side.

How did I get there?

Research

The goal of conducting research is to gain insights into the behaviors and pain points of individuals who attempt to rescue stray animals. By understanding their experiences and challenges, we can identify opportunities to improve the process of rescuing strays. It is also essential to gain professional insights into the proper procedures for rescuing and caring for strays, ensuring that our app provides accurate and reliable information to our users.

There are a huge amount of Stray animals which are abandoned, neglected, and left to suffer without proper care and support every year. The lack of resources and infrastructure to care for them means that their survival is often uncertain, and their well-being is at risk.

Online Survey

I utilized Google Forms to collect data, and received 48 responses from participants.

Interview

I conducted interviews with a total of 5 individuals - 2 with experience rescuing or helping strays, 2 without, and 1 is the employee from Lifeline Animal Shelter.

Mind Map & Affinity Map

Mind mapping helps me to explore and refine ideas, by allowing to quickly sketch out potential solutions and concepts.

Empathy Map

Empathy map helped to get a deep understanding about target users.

Persona

What Are People Saying?

Difficulty Finding

Available Resources

It is challenging to find shelters and animal rescues that are available and willing to accept stray animals, especially in cases where they are overloaded, have lower priority, or are unresponsive. Additionally, it can be difficult to find shelters that allow walk-ins or that meet specific expectations regarding care and treatment.

Lack of Knowledge

and Guidance

Many individuals want to help stray animals but are unsure of the correct methods for rescuing and providing care. This lack of knowledge can lead to confusion, frustration, and even harm to the animals.

Limited Individual Availability

Individuals who wish to help stray animals may have limited availability due to other obligations, such as work or family responsibilities. This can make it challenging to provide immediate assistance to animals in need.

Financial Constraints

Rescuing and caring for stray animals can be costly, and many individuals may not have the financial resources to cover these expenses. This can lead to feelings of helplessness and frustration when they are unable to provide the necessary care and treatment for the animals.

Feedback

According to the valuable feedback that I got from the user testing, I made some changes on the design.

“One thing for the ‘Home’ on the nav bar, doesn’t make sense. Explore would be the best word for it.”

Confusion Of The Naming Convention

“On ‘Let’s get started’ page. I think is too redundant to have many content text on that page.”

Redundant Content Takes More Effort To Read

“On the shelter’s info page, I also want to know what’s their email address.”

“Wish to mark emergency level when I create a post.”

More Information Needed

“Payment methods are too limited right now. Maybe add Apple Pay. Also, I think logo look much better than text.”

“For the payment method, maybe add Zelle or other online payment methods.”

Limitation Of Payment Methods

“I think most of the people are same as me that I usually prefer to see images rather than reading texts. So I don’t have much patient to read those descriptions. Maybe combine it with photos would be great.”

More Images Rather Than Texts

User Testing

Due to the time constraints, I conducted quick online and in-person user testings with target users. I gave them 4 specific tasks to complete.

  1. Find and contact shelters/rescues

  2. Get professional advices of helping strays

  3. Report a stray to the community

  4. Start a fundraiser
